Kırşehir Ahi Evran University, Kırşehir Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, Kırşehir Commodity Exchange, and Kırşehir Chamber of Agriculture jointly launched the “Wheat, Barley, and Forage Crops Demonstration Project.” As part of the project, demonstration plantings of 25 drought-resistant varieties of local wheat, barley, triticale, and vetch were carried out to minimize farmers' losses in the steppe.
The performance of grain crops planted on land belonging to the Kırşehir Commodity Exchange will be demonstrated to producers in the field during the harvest season. Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at our university Prof. Dr. Selahattin Çınar commented on the project's purpose, explaining that they planted crops with the aim of obtaining productive and high-quality products despite the difficulties caused by climatic conditions, Çınar said that high-yield and drought-resistant products were preferred in order to support roughage production and contribute to animal husbandry. Prof. Dr. Selahattin Çınar explained that they planted bread and pasta wheat, barley, triticale, and vetch grain products in separate plots and continued his speech as follows: "We will organize a Field Day event to explain the products we have planted to the producers in person at the time of harvest. At the same time, we have obtained and planted different types of products certified by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's Ankara Field Crops Research Institute, Eskişehir Transition Zone Research Institute, and Konya Bahri Dağdaş International Research Institute. The desired yield could not be achieved with the varieties planted in previous years. We will plant different seeds registered in the Central Anatolia Region and, so to speak, pit them against each other to identify those suitable for the region. The Kırşehir region is particularly known for its barley, wheat, chickpea, lentil, and vetch grain mixtures. Therefore, the seeds we planted are entirely geared toward these types.
Kırşehir Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Bülent Zafer Taş said that crops suitable for the region's structure, combating drought, and suitable for the steppe were identified and planted. Explaining that farmers are also trying to prevent yield losses in their products, Taş stated that they will observe the performance of the grain varieties planted in cooperation with partner institutions and recommend the ideal products to farmers.
The Wheat, Barley, and Forage Crops Demonstration Project in Kırşehir, the heart of the steppe, will cultivate products resistant to the region's structure and drought, thereby minimizing losses for producers while prioritizing productivity and quality in the grain crops grown.
