Serdar Sunay and İbrahim Aydemir, students of the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of KAEU designed and manufactured commando mortars.

Advisor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Levent Urtekin, who stated that they are carrying out various studies related to the Defense Industry, stated that with the project, students both design and manufacture of the mortar.

KAEU Gives Value to Production and Innovation
Rector of KAEU Prof. Dr. Vatan Karakaya who made a brief statement about the developed 'mortar', said: "We are a university that values production and innovation. Now, the defense industry cannot be considered independent from the science, technology, and industry of the country, the development of the defense industry is very important considering the current situation of the world. Our university will keep on working on the creation and use of technology. We are ready to train researchers and develop projects for defense industry of Turkiye. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the faculty members and students of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture for their hard work.”

What is a Mortar?
They are fire support weapons used by infantry units, which can shoot with the high angle group, are muzzle-loaded weapons, and are fired automatically as soon as the bullet hits the needle at the bottom of the barrel in some models, while in some models it is fired by pulling the firing rope similar to those in cannons and howitzers. Mortars do not have conventional effective ranges; their ranges depend on the bullet they fire. The main ammunition types of mortars are high-explosive, illumination, smoke, and training rounds. Apart from these, modern ammunition types currently under development are such as cargo munitions carrying scattered mines or anti-tank SADARM munitions, etc. The term of high angle group can be simply defined as the weapons of which ammunition coming out of the barrel does not reach the target directly, but first rises upwards and then falls to the target vertically from the top. In this way, lob shots can be made behind a hill or a high building.

60 mm Commando Mortar

The Commando Mortar, which provides close-range mortar support in counter-terrorism, conventional and joint operations of our commando units, enables the soldiers to put pressure on the target area by making fast and effective shots thanks to its lightness and practical installation. Thanks to its practical scope ruler, it allows quick shooting at targets from 100 meters to1400 meters. Unlike its counterparts, it provides a more accurate aiming of the target direction, day and night, with the foresight and backsight attached to the muzzle.
